You can't improve what you can't measure. That's the problem most companies face with AI search: they know visibility matters, but they have no way to quantify it. Traditional SEO metrics — rankings, impressions, CTR — don't capture whether your brand is being cited in AI answers.

An AI Visibility Score solves this. It's a standardized metric that measures exactly how visible your brand is across the major AI platforms — and, more importantly, why your score is what it is, so you know what to fix.

AEOU's AI Visibility Score is measured on a 20-point scale using the CITE Framework. It runs 24 queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude and returns both a composite score and a per-dimension breakdown.

What is an AI Visibility Score?

An AI Visibility Score is a composite metric that measures how frequently and prominently your brand is cited by major AI platforms when answering questions relevant to your category, product, or services.

Unlike Google rankings (position 1–100), AI visibility is fundamentally binary: for any given query, your brand is either cited or it isn't. The score aggregates this across many queries to give you a percentage and a normalized score. AEOU uses a 20-point scale to make it easy to track and communicate progress.

The CITE Framework: How the Score is Calculated

AEOU's AI Visibility Score is built on four measurable dimensions — the CITE Framework:

C

Crawlability (0–4)

Can AI crawlers actually access and read your pages? Checks robots.txt for GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot. Also checks HTTPS, page speed, and render quality.

I

Information Architecture (0–4)

Is your content structured for AI extraction? Checks FAQ schema, Article schema, structured headers, direct-answer paragraphs, and content completeness.

T

Topical Authority (0–4)

How comprehensive is your coverage of your topic? Checks content cluster depth, semantic coverage, internal linking, content freshness, and the breadth of subtopics covered.

E

Entity Citation (0–4)

How well do AI systems recognize and trust your brand entity? Checks citation rate across live AI queries, entity consistency across platforms, and third-party validation signals.

The four dimensions sum to a maximum of 16 technical points, which maps to the 0–20 scale with the live citation query testing providing the remaining variance. The result: a score that reflects both technical readiness and actual AI citation performance.

The AI Visibility Score Bands

0–3
Not Yet Visible
4–7
Early Presence
8–13
Growing Visibility
14–20
Strong Visibility

Most businesses start at 3–6/20 before any AEO work. The 90-day target for a new AEOU engagement is +5–7 points. Reaching 14+/20 puts a brand in the consistently cited tier — where AI systems treat you as a default reference for your category.

Industry Benchmarks: What Score is "Good"?

IndustryTypical Starting ScoreIndustry AverageStrong Visibility
Agency / Consulting3–58/2014+/20
SaaS / B2B Software3–58/2013+/20
E-commerce2–46/2011+/20
Healthcare / Clinic2–45/2010+/20
Restaurant / F&B2–35/209+/20
Legal Services3–47/2012+/20

Context matters: a restaurant scoring 10/20 is in the "strong" tier for their industry. An AEO agency at the same score is only "growing." Benchmarks should be compared within industry, not across verticals.

Why Traditional SEO Metrics Don't Capture AI Visibility

Google Search Console shows impressions, clicks, and position. None of these tell you whether ChatGPT recommends you when a buyer asks "who are the best [your category] agencies?" You can have excellent organic rankings and a score of 3/20 on AI visibility — and vice versa.

The gap between SEO performance and AI visibility is where most companies are losing ground right now. Measuring both separately is the only way to close it.

DIY AI Visibility Measurement

You can run a manual baseline measurement today:

  1. List 20 queries relevant to your category and audience
  2. Run each in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini
  3. Record: cited (Y/N), platform, position in response (mentioned first, second, or in a list)
  4. Calculate: citation rate = total mentions / (total queries × 3 platforms)
  5. Repeat monthly and track the trend

Manual testing is slow (60 queries per month) and susceptible to AI response variation. AEOU's Score Engine automates this at scale — 24 queries × 4 platforms = 96 data points per run, with normalization for response variation.
